Automation at its finest at Eurovision Song Contest 2025

The Eurovision Song Contest is the world’s longest-running televised music competition. It is organised each year by the European Broadcasting Union and brings together participating countries who each submit an original song to be performed live on stage. The show reaches over 160 million viewers worldwide and is known for its celebration of musical diversity, striking performances and technical ambition.

The 2025 edition was one of the largest productions to date. It involved an enormous team of specialists across creative and technical departments, all working together to deliver a seamless live experience. Among them was Mathias, an experienced automation specialist who returned this year as Head of Automation. He spoke to us about what it was like behind the scenes, what stood out technically, and how CyberMotion played an important role in making it all happen.

Hi Mathias, can you tell us a bit about your role at Eurovision Song Contest 2025 and what made this edition unique for you?

Yeah, sure. I’ve been involved in Eurovision for several years now in different roles. This year I was Head of Automation which basically means I was responsible for making sure all the moving elements like trusses and hoists did exactly what they needed to do at the right time. Sometimes I’m there through my own company In Motion and other times through 3rd parties. This year it was a mix of both which was fun. What made it unique? The whole setup was super well prepared and actually very relaxed. Once you’ve done it a few times, you just know what to focus on and how to work smoothly with the crew around you. That really makes a difference.

How big was the crew and how did the overall production feel on site?

It’s hard to say exactly how many people were involved but it’s a massive operation. Between the core crew, the artist teams, broadcasters, and tech partners, there’s a whole world behind the scenes. Despite the size of it all, this year had a more intimate vibe somehow. You could feel that people were really there to enjoy the show. That energy carried through the whole production.

What were some standout moments at Eurovision Song Contest  for you from a technical perspective?

There were quite a few. Albania had a beautiful automation moment during their set. Ukraine had these wingflaps at the end of their song which we created using hoist movements. Croatia also had a lot of automation involved, maybe around 60 to 70 percent of their performance. Not every act went that route though, some wanted to keep things more static and focused on the artist.

Can you explain how CyberHoists were used and why CyberMotion was chosen?

We used 84 CyberHoists to move a range of trusses, 12 lines split between left and right, 24 trusses on stage, and 4 off-stage. They weren’t just going up and down either. We had curved movements, triangles, and even some arch formations. CyberMotion handled all the vertical motion and syncing. The reason we go with CyberMotion is simple. They’re reliable, fast to program, and if there’s ever a problem you just send a message and someone helps you out right away. That level of support really matters when you’re on a tight schedule.

How did Cybermotion’s system impact the final result and what was the audience response?

Their system gave us a lot of flexibility. Even after rehearsals we could still make changes to get everything right. That kind of speed and adaptability helps shape each performance more precisely. The audience might not always see the tech itself but they feel it when everything flows perfectly. It just adds to the whole experience.

What were the biggest challenges this year at Eurovision Song Contest?

Time. Always time. Each act had their own needs and preferences. So we had to program everything based on what we expected without having the final versions. And then once rehearsals started everything changed. You can’t reprogram during the live show so everything has to be done right ahead of time. That’s why I really like working with CyberMotion. Their system is fast and reliable. It feels like you have time but honestly it flies by.

Looking ahead, what does the future look like with CyberMotion?

I think it looks very promising. If they keep up the pace of innovation and development they have now, they’re only going to grow further. They’re making real progress in the live entertainment industry and I’m pretty sure they’ll continue to push things forward. For anyone working on complex productions where timing, flexibility, and reliability are crucial, CyberMotion is definitely a partner worth considering. Their system lets you work fast, adapt quickly, and focus on the creative side because you know the technical side is rock solid.
