Interview with CyberMotion Rental US’s project manager PJ Visser!
For the second year in a row, CyberMotion Rental US played a key role in DJ Subtronics’ electrifying performance in Seattle, Washington at Cyclops Dome. This show pushed the boundaries of stage production, featuring intricate motion control and a dynamic, immersive design. A highly technical approach was essential for this one-off event, and CyberMotion ensured its seamless execution. We spoke with the CyberMotion Rental US Team about the challenges, innovations, and meticulous planning behind this ambitious project.
This was the second time in a row that CyberMotion Rental US was involved in Subtronics’ large-scale annual show ‘Cyclops Dome 2’. What was CyberMotion Rental US’ role in this production?
We handled the motion control aspect of the show, ensuring that the kinetic elements moved precisely in sync with the performance. This year, the show’s design created an immersive experience, incorporating 52 CyberHoists spread across 13 clusters, each containing four hoists. The entire system connected via fiber across three different control locations, all managed from Front of House.
What were the biggest technical challenges in this production?
One of the biggest challenges was the tight schedule. After the prep phase, the entire load-in had to be completed in just a day and a half. Setting up a system of this scale, programming it, and ensuring it was ready in such a short timeframe required careful planning and coordination. Thanks to an efficient approach, the process ran smoothly without significant setbacks.
Another challenge involved ensuring the design translated from 3D renders to real life. Designers often create stunning visual concepts, but bringing them to reality requires a critical eye. We assessed the feasibility of these designs and made necessary adjustments to guarantee a safe and reliable execution.
How was the motion system from CyberMotion controlled during the show?
The show relied primarily on timecode for control, ensuring seamless synchronization between music, lighting, video, and motion. This approach allowed movements to align perfectly with the music, creating a smooth and intuitive experience. Some elements also operated live, allowing for real-time adjustments when needed.
Timecode programming eliminates the need to manually adjust speeds for different movements. Instead, everything follows a time-based structure, ensuring precise synchronization. This method proves especially beneficial for touring setups, where stage heights and configurations may change from venue to venue. Programming based on speed would require constant adjustments, but with time-based programming, consistency remains intact.
The design was described as immersive. What made it stand out?
Traditionally, kinetic elements stay positioned above the stage. In this case, the motion design extended above the audience, seamlessly integrating with the stage visuals. The moving PODs could shift between large and intimate configurations, dynamically transforming the venue’s atmosphere.
Because the movement flowed fluidly and synchronized perfectly with the music, the show delivered an incredibly engaging experience. The audience didn’t just watch a performance, they became part of it. Creating this kind of immersive environment is something we take pride in.
What was the collaboration like with LMG and the production team?
LMG is a fantastic partner, as always. Having collaborated on multiple projects, we’ve built a strong level of trust and understanding between our teams. The production manager played a crucial role in keeping everything organized and driving innovative solutions. Their continued support and exciting projects make our partnership invaluable.
CyberMotion’s pillar is reliability. How do you ensure every production meets expectations?
It starts with transparency. We never make promises we can’t keep just to secure a project. Our team understands exactly what our technology can achieve, and we communicate that clearly from the beginning.
Before arriving on-site, we establish clear boundaries regarding feasibility. However, we also remain flexible. On this project, for instance, we initially took a cautious approach but later adjusted certain parameters on-site to expand creative possibilities. Striking the right balance between certainty and adaptability is key.
Looking back, what’s the biggest takeaway from this show?
This project reinforced the value of seamless collaboration and meticulous planning. Every element functioned exactly as designed, and the client was thrilled with the outcome. It also highlighted the advantages of timecode-based motion programming, especially for immersive, dynamic productions. We take pride in how smoothly everything ran and look forward to more exciting collaborations. Working with LMG was a pleasure, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!
