A conversation with Will-Jan Pielage, Technical Director of Schauspielhaus
Schauspielhaus Bochum is one of the most highly regarded theaters in Germany. Each year, they stage around twenty in-house productions across three venues. Their primary focus is on theater, though they occasionally program dance performances as well. Visitors come from all over the country to experience the artistic and technical excellence they offer.
The production where CyberMotion plays a crucial role is Waiting for Godot. How did this collaboration come about?
“For this production, directed by Ulrich Rasche, we wanted to create a striking and technically challenging set piece: a nine-meter-wide, two-meter-thick disc suspended above the stage. This element weighs a massive two tons and moves both vertically and around its own axis. The movements needed to be extremely precise and fluid, without any visible vibrations or jolts. The 1000kG Cyberhoist (CH1000S) provided exactly what we needed for these vertical movements.”
What makes CyberMotion so suitable for this application?
“There were several reasons why we chose the CyberMotion systems. First and foremost, the precision: their motors deliver exceptionally quiet and accurate movements. This is crucial in a theatrical production where subtle details have a major impact. Additionally, their system excels in controlled, slow movements. Many mechanical systems struggle with slow movements because motors tend to overheat. CyberMotion has a solution for this, ensuring smooth performance without overheating.”
How did your technical team experience the implementation of CyberMotion?
“Ease of use was a major advantage. CyberMotion’s console is intuitive and makes it easy to precisely control movements. This was essential, as the disc hovers just millimeters above the ground at certain points. Furthermore, Ampco Flashlight and CyberMotion provide excellent support. Through Ampco Flashlight, there is 24/7 phone service, and for complex issues, their experts can even come on-site. That gives us a lot of confidence.”
Your technical department is quite extensive. How did the integration process go?
“We have a team of 140 to 150 people who create all sets, costumes, and props in-house. Our technical department includes specialists in woodworking, metalworking, and upholstery. Four of our machinists received special training to operate CyberMotion. They work shifts during setup, teardown, and the performances themselves.”
What were the biggest challenges during the construction process?
“Suspending the disc presented major technical challenges. The forces exerted on the suspension points required highly precise calculations and tests. We conducted several safety tests, including an emergency stop test, to ensure the stability of the building. Ampco Flashlight and CyberMotion not only provided us with the necessary technology but also contributed to finding the best approach.”
How has CyberMotion influenced the artistic side of the production?
“The audience is mesmerized by the movements of the disc, while the talented actors perform beneath it on two rotating turntables built onto the stage. The projections and lighting effects are seamlessly integrated with the movements, creating a visually breathtaking experience. The actors perfectly adapt to the rotating platforms, giving the performance a unique dynamism. Thanks to CyberMotion, we were able to realize our artistic vision.”
Are you already looking towards the future?
“Our collaboration with CyberMotion through Ampco Flashlight runs until July this season, but we are considering extending Waiting for Godot into the 2025/2026 season. We are extremely satisfied: the technology performs flawlessly, the financial agreements are viable, and communication runs smoothly. If future productions require advanced motion systems, CyberMotion will certainly be one of our top choices.”
Schauspielhaus Bochum demonstrates with this production how modern theater technology can elevate a performance to new heights. The precise and reliable movements of CyberMotion transform an artistic concept into a breathtaking live experience. The combination of craftsmanship, technical innovation, and artistic vision makes this collaboration a perfect example of how technology and art can seamlessly merge.
